Today there are a lot of people across this already great nation who are afraid, angry, hurting and questioning everything they were ever taught. Over the last 18 months we have seen our country more divided than ever as two political candidates fought for their chance to serve as the 45th president of these United States of America. In the wee hours this morning, one emerged victorious, the other gracefully conceded.
Today is a day that most of us never thought possible. We laughed at the thought and used reason to justify the implausibility of such a ridiculous idea. We used memes detailing lack of experience and saw the ads about hate speech in various forms. And yet, here we stand today.
We teach our children not to be bullies but our next president has been just that. We teach our boys to respect girls while our next president violates and openly disrespects them. We teach equality and tolerance and yet the victor wants to build a wall, deport the immigrants and ban anyone who looks like they could possibly be Muslim. We’ve all seen the ads, heard the speeches and criticized his debates but WE have made our voices clear; WE have elected Donald J. Trump as our next president.
I say we because there is only us. We cannot divide ourselves any further than we already have and yet at the end of the day, come January 20th, Trump will be OUR president. I don’t know what the future has in store for us as a country but here’s what I do know. For my brothers and sisters who have been kissed by the sun and somewhere down the line can trace their roots back to the beautiful and ancient motherland of Africa-we have been through worse. We endured the Atlantic Ocean with meager provisions. We survived slavery and the hangings. We made it through Jim Crow and Bull Connor. We have come over a way that with tears has been watered; We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered. And we’re still here.
As a country we have endured Nixon, Raegan and two thick Bushes. We have gone through two depressions, countless wars and billion dollar crises. And we’re still here.
Yes, Trump is a bigot, a racist, a homophobe and a lot of other words. But he’s ours. That’s what this country is about. We say if you want something, go do it. If you’re not happy, change it. Ride or Die. Well, he did. So, we will wait and see what happens from here.
Since I’m a “preacher” I guess I should offer more than my own dissatisfaction about the outcome. Well, here ya go…We have strayed far from being one nation under God; I mean really far. While I will not say this was God’s will, I’m sure that something good can come from it. Maybe this will be the reality check we-and especially the church needed. Maybe folks will begin to think about what it means to be “decent” and what love and justice really look like. Maybe we will turn to our Creator for wisdom and direction. Maybe we will ban together to be great while following the Disciple’s polar star of unity just like the magi followed the star in the east. Maybe this star will lead us to the next great awakening and period of enlightenment. Maybe this is the spark that will cause a revival and consuming fire. Maybe, just maybe. If God could use a jackass to save a man’s life, then surely the same God can use Donald J. Trump to bring about something great.
This is the hope I have moving forward. Yes, it sucks but this is America. Together-with the reddest of necks and darkest of skins-we stand or divided-blue vs red vs black vs all-we fall.
