You know how sometimes you buy something and then it just sits around your house taking up space? I have a lot of those kinds of things in my home, including books. I absolutely love reading but my schedule doesn't always allow me to get around to reading the things I buy. The Other 90% by Robert K. Cooper is one of those books that has been collecting dust on my bookshelf for at least ten years. This morning, I dusted it off and was amazed by the introduction, which I’ll reflect upon here.
I don’t know who first said the words “give the world the best you have and the best will come back to you” but today I hear them in a new way; I hear them as a daily challenge. I would argue that most people really do want to become great and be the best they can. No one grows up wanting to be ordinary or to just blend in. We all want to be the best and make an impact that outlives our brief earthly existence. The people who make a difference and climb the ladder of success are those who find ways to keep going when everyone else quits or does what no one else thought could be done. Giving your best is about “learning something more about who you are and all the potential that’s hidden inside of you. Every day you can choose to become more than you have been”.
Prior to this week’s launch team meeting I didn’t believe we could be anything more than ordinary. I reasoned no one was interested in Christianity or faith in the twenty-first century. We were simply spinning our wheels and going nowhere. While not ready to throw in the towel I wasn’t sure what was next or where we should invest our energy. With the support of my incredible team we continue to move forward to offer a second chance to everyone we encounter. We all have unused potential that’s just waiting to be tapped into and unlocked; things that can drastically change the course of our lives for the better. As we share our vision of a new church and helping people become all that God has destined for them, it’s about unlocking potential and dreams, passions and purpose. And so I invite all of you on this journey with me to be your best and expect the best to come back to you. We must “look inside ourselves, test new possibilities and search for what matters most to each of us”. And when we collectively put our best together I just believe something incredible will happen in the world.
